Wannado Weekend Update – 10/26/12

For the folks who will be in and around Nashville this weekend, here’s just a small sample of the staggering number of really cool events happening in and around our backyard over the next few days. We at Wannado have decided to highlight these for your enjoyment because they just have that “Nashville feel,” are being organized by local people and organizations, and/or are just that ridiculously awesome. Come on out for the last Docktoberfest Friday! It’s totally FREE. Jackalope Beer is available inside and outside, and food trucks will be there serving up some delicious food to accompany the musical awesomeness we have lined up.

With Your Friends Music Fest

Friday and Saturday — 4pm at the corner of Broadway and 2nd Ave downtown, Ticket prices vary

The inaugural With Your Friends Festival has charged Skrillex and Pretty Lights as headliners and curators. The festival will also feature an official after party on a river boat. The lineup to also include longtime hip-hop heavyweight Nas (reportedly with a nine-piece band), electronica darling Santigold, dubstepper 12th Planet and fellow DJs Dillon Francis, Michal Menert and TOKiMONSTA.

Belmont Fall Follies 2012

Friday at 7:30pm, Saturday at 2:00pm and 7:30pm — Massey Performing Arts Center, FREE

Live comedic sketches, musical guests, video parodies, and music videos, all of which are focused on Belmont making fun of itself.

Margaret Atwood: Public Lecture

10am at the Nashville Public Library downtown, FREE

2012 Nashville Public Library Literary Award honoree Margaret Atwood will speak about her novel A Handmaid’s Tale, recognized as the inaugural book selection by Mayor Karl Dean for his citywide campaign “Nashville Reads.” Sponsored by the Nashville Public Library Foundation. Atwood has been recognized and awarded internationally for her work through awards and honorary degrees.

Annual Jack Daniel’s World Championship Invitational Barbecue

10am at Lynchburg Square & Wiseman Park in Lynchburg, FREE

This event began in 1989 and is today considered one of the most prestigious barbecue competitions in the world. Teams from across the United States and around the world compete in the categories of Pork Ribs, Pork Shoulder, Beef Brisket and Chicken, as well as Sauces and Desserts. To qualify for “The Jack,” U.S. teams must have already won a competition in which 50 or more teams participated, or they must have won a competition of at least 25 teams that has been designated a “state championship.”

Second Harvest of Middle TN BackPack Program: Make a Difference Day Project

1pm at Second Harvest Food Bank, FREE

Second Harvest’s mission is to feed hungry people and work to solve hunger issues in our community. In Middle Tennessee alone, 31 percent of those served by their mission are children.  This provides an opportunity for junior volunteers (age 6 and up) and their family members/guardians to work together to give back to our community. This program provides an opportunity to learn more about hunger issues followed by packing backpacks for the Children’s Backpack Program.

Vanderbilt Homecoming — Commodores Football vs Massachusetts

6pm at Vanderbilt Stadium (Dudley Field), FREE for students, ticket prices vary otherwise

Come support the Vanderbilt Commodores as they take on Massachusetts at Vanderbilt Stadium. It’s also homecoming, so you should expect to see a lot of Coach Franklin yelling ferociously.
